7th Annual Terrapin Tally

The Reserve and N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission are teaming up for the 7th year to conduct diamondback terrapin head count surveys. These surveys continue to help us better understand the status of Diamondback Terrapin populations at the Masonboro Island Reserve. 

Teams of two are assigned a designated route to paddle in the creeks behind Masonboro Island and record sightings of Diamondback Terrapins and crabpots along the way. It's a great way to get involved as a citizen scientist and enjoy the outdoors at the same time. 

Valentine's Day marine debris cleanup at the Masonboro Island Reserve

Show how much you love Masonboro Island Reserve by particiating in a Valentine's Day marine debris cleanup! Reserve staff will provide transportation to Masonboro Island to clean the beach, but space is very limited so registration is required. 

There will be two shifts:


9:00 - 11:30 am
12:00 - 2:30 pm

Currituck Banks Reserve Local Advisory Committee meeting rescheduled

The Currituck Banks Reserve Local Advisory Committee meeting, originally scheduled for December 5, has been rescheduled for January 15 at 11:00 a.m. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education located at Currituck Heritage Park, 1160 Village Lane in Corolla.

Local advisory committees consist of citizens and representatives from community organizations, government agencies, and non-governmental partner organizations who provide the Division of Coastal Management’s Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve staff with guidance and feedback regarding program activities and management of the reserve sites. The meetings are open to the public.

Bald Head Woods Coastal Reserve open to visitors after Hurricane Dorian

The Bald Head Woods Reserve on Bald Head Island in Brunswick County reopened to visitors today after closure due to Hurricane Dorian. With the opening of Bald Head Woods, all North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve sites are open after the storm.
