REMINDER: DEQ information session regarding Belews Creek Steam Station coal ash closure options this Thursday, January 10

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will hold a public information session regarding Duke Energy’s Belews Creek Steam Station on Thursday, January 10 at Walnut Cove Elementary School in Walnut Cove, North Carolina.

This is the first of several opportunities for the community to comment on what they value in a closure plan for Duke’s Belews Creek impoundment. The session will begin at 6 p.m with a welcome statement that will discuss closure options for the site, then recess to a question and answer session where experts on coal ash will address specific questions relating to environmental and public health considerations around closure options.

There are several ways comments may be submitted to DEQ:

  • verbal comments recorded by staff at the meeting
  • by email to Belewscomments@ncdenr.gov
  • by written comment sheets available at the meeting

This informal meeting will offer an opportunity to gather input from stakeholders on what they would like to see in a proposed closure plan. These sessions will be followed by evaluation of closure options by DEQ and a proposed closure plan from Duke Energy that will have another comment period later in the year.
