The NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources (DWR) will hold a public hearing on Sept28, 2026, to accept public comments on the 401 Water Quality Certification Application for Stamey Farm Road Data Center/Compass Data Center in Iredell County.

Register: Speaker registration opens at 5:30 p.m. onsite via sign-in sheet. 

Stamey Farm Road Data Center/Compass Data Center has applied for a 401 Water Quality Certification to construct five single-story data center buildings with one on-site substation. 

Stamey Farm Road Data Center/Compass Data Center is seeking to permanently impact 438 linear feet of jurisdictional streams, 0.13 acres of jurisdictional wetlands and 7.36 acres of jurisdictional open waters.  

The 401 Water Quality Certification would assess whether the proposal would meet state water quality requirements and whether the project has avoided or minimized impacts to surface waters and wetlands, among other considerations. 

The purpose of this public hearing is to allow interested individuals to submit verbal and/or written comments regarding the 401 Water Quality Certification application. Zoning and siting of facilities, including data centers, is determined by local governments. DEQ reviews applications for water quality certifications, construction-related environmental permits, and air and wastewater discharge permits when applicable. 

In addition to providing verbal comments at the hearing, the public can also comment in writing. DWR must receive written comments no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026.
