The NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management (DCM) has launched a new webpage for The Topsail Nature Preserve, providing residents and visitors with a central online resource for information about the Preserve, public access, responsible recreation and DCM’s management and stewardship efforts.
The page, located on DCM’s website, follows the transition of The Topsail Nature Preserve from the N.C. Coastal Land Trust to DCM management in May 2026. The transition supports the long-term conservation of the property while maintaining responsible public access and use.
“The Topsail Nature Preserve is an extraordinary coastal resource, and its long-term protection depends on both thoughtful management and responsible stewardship by those who enjoy it,” said DCM Director Tancred Miller. “This new online resource gives the public an easy way to learn about the Preserve, plan a visit, understand how to enjoy it responsibly and join us in protecting it for future generations.”

- Public access and visitor information
- Rules and guidelines for responsible use
- DCM management and stewardship efforts
- Protecting sensitive habitats and wildlife
- Management updates and future stewardship opportunities
DCM will update the page as additional information and resources become available.
Visitors to The Topsail Nature Preserve play an important role in protecting its sensitive coastal environment. DCM encourages visitors to follow posted rules and guidance, respect wildlife and natural habitats, properly dispose of trash and help preserve the area’s natural character.
Management of the Preserve builds upon conservation efforts led by the N.C. Coastal Land Trust and reflects continued collaboration among DCM, the Town of Topsail Beach, conservation organizations and other state and local partners.
Protecting natural coastal areas such as The Topsail Nature Preserve helps conserve important habitats, maintain opportunities for public access and recreation, and contribute to a more resilient North Carolina coast.
