Submit Comments on Proactive Sheepshead Management

At its August 2024 meeting, the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission requested the Division investigate trends in the sheepshead commercial and recreational fisheries to determine if proactive management changes are needed. Division staff investigated shifts in effort, landings increases, and possible size and age truncation of the sheepshead stock. Because North Carolina’s recreational sheepshead fishery has grown substantially in the last several years, and commercial harvest has increased, proactive management measures are being considered.
