The landfill is located on Freedom Park Road in Beaufort, Carteret County, NC, and was reportedly operated by the Town of Beaufort from 1953 to 1976. The landfill property is privately owned and subject to a NCDEQ Brownfields Agreement.
As part of landfill assessment, the NCDEQ Pre-Regulatory Landfill (PRLF) Program reported elevated levels of methane and hydrogen sulfide in soil gas near residential properties on Sea Hawk Street and Great Egret Way. The results indicate the potential for landfill gas migration and the need for additional assessment to determine whether gases may be affecting nearby properties. Soil-gas results do not mean that landfill gas has been detected inside nearby homes. Indoor screening conducted by NCDEQ to date did not detect landfill gas inside the residence tested.
While additional sampling is being done, NCDEQ has requested access to potentially impacted houses and is offering to install methane alarms, screen inside the home for gases, and collect additional samples. If a potential risk is identified, a mitigation system will be offered to the owner. The PRLF Program is funding eligible assessment and mitigation activities, including methane detectors, at no cost to property owners or tenants. Property owners who have received a letter or access request from NCDEQ are encouraged to follow the instructions provided and contact NCDEQ with questions about the assessment process.
