City of Greensboro
Emergency transfer granted but not utilized
In November 1998, the City of Greensboro requested approval from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the temporary emergency transfer of surface water. The request was made in order to supplement the City's water supply from its reservoirs, which had been depleted to approximately 50% capacity due to persistent drought conditions at the time. The City requested the ability to transfer more than 2 million gallons per day (MGD) from the Yadkin River Basin to the Haw River Basin and to transfer more than 2 MGD from the Deep River Basin to the Haw River Basin.
A timely increase in precipitation replinished the City of Greensboro's water supply, relieving the City of sustained drought conditions. Therefore, the requested interbasin transfers never had to be utilized in order to provide an emergency water supply to the City of Greensboro.
