DEQ is the primary environment agency and model for sustainable actions of all North Carolina government agencies. The mission of the sustainability team is to inspire a culture of sustainability within DEQ by promoting environmentally responsible actions.

Rooftop Bees

DEQ volunteers treat the hives, harvest the fall honey, and learn beekeeping on the Green Square rooftop.

Waste Reduction

The Green Square compost pilot has diverted over 2,000 pounds of waste since the program began in April 2024, creating over 200 pounds of usable compost. Learn more about DEQ's recycling, compost, and e-waste initiatives.
