Helene recovery, 2 years later

Two years ago, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, taking more than 100 lives and causing an estimated $60 billion in damage. 

One of the top priorities at the NC Department of Environmental Quality has been helping communities recover and rebuild in way to be more resilient when facing future storms.

$10M for Flood Resilience

The Flood Resilience Blueprint has funded 19 projects in the French Broad River Basin.

$10M for Dam Safety Grants

Awards will repair or remove nine dams to protect lives and property downstream.

$14M for Debris Removal

For river restoration and converting storm debris into nutrient-rich soil for farmland.

$61M for DWM/DEACS

NCDEQ received $61 million in federal funding for Hurricane Helene cleanup and recovery efforts.

$5M for Microgrids

DEQ invested $5 million in microgrids to provide reliable power after weather disasters.

$5.1M for Brownfields Restoration

DEQ’s Brownfields program helped revitalize underused properties and clean up contaminated sites

$10M for Weatherization Readiness

NCDEQ allocated $10 million to help repair and weatherize homes damaged by Hurricane Helene.
