State environmental officials are requiring towns with pretreatment programs in the Cape Fear River Basin to monitor for a set of emerging compounds starting this summer.

State to release sterile grass carp for hydrilla control in Harris Lake

The Department of Environmental Quality, in cooperation with the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission and Duke Energy, will be stocking 2,500 sterile grass carp at Harris Lake to control hydrilla, a particularly aggressive aquatic plant.

N.C. Environmental Management Commission to Meet May 8-9

The N.C. Environmental Management Commission will meet May 8-9 at the Archdale Building in downtown Raleigh. Commission committees will meet Wednesday, May 8, with the full commission meeting Thursday, May 9. Topics to be discussed include a proposed rule on methyl bromide use in log fumigation, a petition to repeal the swamp designation for a portion of the Cape Fear River and an update on North Carolina’s Coastal Habitat Protection Plan. Six coastal reserve sites to hold local advisory committee meetings in April and May
