State officials have directed Chemours to provide bottled water to 15 more well owners near the company’s Fayetteville facility after the most recent test results showed GenX above the provisional state health goal of 140 parts per trillion in their wells.

State officials received results from well testing for Gen X at two elementary schools in the Gray’s Creek community in Cumberland County. There was no detection of GenX at Alderman Elementary School. Results for Gray’s Creek Elementary School showed concentrations of 5.19 parts per trillion, which is well below the state’s provisional drinking water health goal of 140 parts per trillion.

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission will meet in Atlantic Beach next week to provide new commissioners with an overview of the state’s coastal program, consider amendments to rules on erosion control and other coastal issues.

Statewide monitoring shows that North Carolina continues to be in full compliance with national air quality standards as the 2017 ozone season ends today.

Reporters are invited to Wednesday’s 2017 Albemarle-Pamlico Ecosystem Symposium: Eyes on the Horizon where experts will lead a discussion on issues impacting the rivers and estuaries of the Albemarle-Pamlico region.

At the Department of Environmental Quality’s urging, Chemours will capture additional industrial wastewater with fluorinated compounds instead of releasing it into the Cape Fear River. The compounds were identified in an EPA report as coming from manufacturing areas inside the company’s Fayetteville Works facility.

Local advisory committees for seven coastal reserves will meet in November. The meetings are open to the public.

In a letter sent today to Chemours, the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality informed the company that the state agency is continuing to look carefully at the Chemours wastewater discharge to make sure it executes remedial measures required by DEQ.

The state Division of Coastal Management has awarded more than $1.6 million to 14 local governments to improve public access to coastal beaches and waters for the 2017-18 fiscal year. “We want people to be able to enjoy North Carolina’s beautiful beaches and waterways,” said Michael S. Regan, secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality. “These funds will allow for much greater access to our beaches and waterways, which helps visitors and bolsters coastal economies.”
