Herbicide treatment for an infestation of Hydrilla in the Eno River will resume today and continue through September. Hydrilla is a highly destructive, non-native aquatic plant that grows rapidly and creates thick mats on the surface of waterways. 

The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality is seeking public feedback on two draft stormwater permits and a draft wastewater permit for Duke Energy’s Buck Combined Cycle Station. The Rowan County facility discharges to the Yadkin River in the Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basin.   

The state Department of Environmental Quality has extended the public comment periods for two draft consent orders that will establish agreements for Duke Energy to drain coal ash ponds more quickly at the company’s Buck, Belews Creek, Mayo and Roxboro facilities. The consent orders will allow the utility to close out the impoundments earlier than the deadline that is required by the state Coal Ash Management Act.

State officials announced an information session has been scheduled about the state’s ongoing activities related to the GenX investigation that originated at Chemours’ Fayetteville Works facility. The information session is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29, at St. Pauls Middle School, located at 526 West Shaw Street in St. Pauls.

The North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission’s Science Panel will meet May 24 in Wilmington to review updated proposed inlet hazard areas.

Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Air Quality (DAQ) is holding a public information session to accompany the public comment period on a proposed air quality permit for Public Service Company of North Carolina’s (PSNC) Mill Spring Compressor Station on Silver Creek Road in Polk County. The meeting will be held at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, May 23, in the R. Jay Foster Hall of Justice at the Bryant H. Womack Building located at 40 Courthouse Street in Columbus, North Carolina.  DAQ will provide a short presentation on the draft air quality permit and answer questions

State officials have announced a new location for the continuation of a public hearing to seek additional feedback on a permit application from Malec Brothers Transport, LLC. Additionally, the Division of Air Quality (DAQ) will hold a public information session at 6:00 pm, one hour prior to that hearing. Both sessions will take place on May 15 at East Columbus High School, 32 Gator Lane in Lake Waccamaw on the Malec Brothers’ draft permit.

Local Advisory Committees for eight coastal reserves will meet in May. The meetings are open to the public.

State officials have announced an extension to the second public comment period and a new public hearing date to seek additional feedback on a permit application from Malec Brothers Transport, LLC. The Division of Air Quality (DAQ) will hold a public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 15 at Acme Delco Middle School, 26133 Andrew Jackson Highway, in Delco on the Malec Brothers’ draft permit. The public comment period has been extended to May 18.
