The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Waste Management Solid Waste Section has prepared draft Solid Waste Permit No. 9230-CDLF-2014 that would approve a horizontal expansion and a service area increase to the Greenway Waste Solutions of Apex Construction and Demolition Debris Landfill. The facility is located at 5940 Old Smithfield Road, Apex in Wake County. The draft permit is available for public review and comment.
The public comment period on Draft Permit 9230-CDLF-2014 begins on May 6, 2025, and ends at 5 p.m. on June 20, 2025. Interested parties may provide written comments at the link below.

The North Carolina Division of Waste Management (Division) received a Groundwater Corrective Action Permit Modification Application to address groundwater contamination at the BFI Charlotte Motor Speedway V MSW Landfill located at 5105 Morehead Road, Cabarrus County, NC. The applicant’s proposed selected remedy includes 1) Source Control through landfill gas collection, capping, and leachate collection, 2) Phytoremediation and Monitored Natural Attenuation for 1,4-Dioxane and metals, and 3) Air Sparging for volatile organic compounds. The proposed selected remedy requires public input prior to Division approval.
The public comment period for the Notice of Groundwater Selected Remedy begins on July 26, 2025, and ends on September 8, 2025. Interested parties may provide written comments to the Division contact listed below.

DWM Solid Waste Section Community Engagement Workshop - Being updated.
The Solid Waste Section and DEQ's Public Engagement Program, in partnership with NC SWANA, held a workshop on June 28, 2022. The workshop included the history and background of engagement in North Carolina as well as a panel discussion. Primarily, the workshop was geared toward environmental consultants who gather data, prepare reports, and craft outreach efforts. The training can be viewed at the link above.
