Private Wells

The Public Water Supply Section is responsible for enforcing rules and regulations pertaining to public water supply systems. Questions about private wells should be directed to the appropriate regional office of the Water Quality Regional Operations Section or to the local health department.

Residential and Non-Residential Well construction forms are provided from the Water Quality Regional Operations Section.

Well testing requirements for private wells are governed by the Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health, Environmental Health Section’s On-site Water Protection Branch.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has a free online course to help homeowners understand and care for their water well. Ten weekly lessons and monthly web trainings teach private well owners the basics of managing and protecting their water source.
