Data Management & Analysis Branch
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality Division of Water Resources (DWR) Data Management & Analysis Branch (DMAB) supports data management, integration and analysis across the division through three major platforms: the Environmental Quality Information System (EQuIS), Laserfiche and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
Our mission is to improve data accessibility and connectivity across platforms, streamline data collection and management workflows, and develop efficient tools and data products for internal staff and the public. By promoting collaboration, reducing redundant processes and improving data discovery and analysis, DMAB helps DWR programs operate more efficiently, make informed decisions, and fulfill their regulatory responsibilities.
Geographic Information Systems
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are computer-based tools used to capture, store, analyze and visualize spatial or geographic data. The DWR GIS Team develops and supports GIS data, workflows, and web mapping applications. To access public data, explore applications and download data for the department, please visit the NCDEQ GIS Open Data Portal. DWR’s public GIS datasets can be viewed in the DWR Locator Map application, among others found on the Open Data Portal or the DWR Maps & Resources page.

EQuIS
EQuIS is an advanced environmental data management and decision support system used by NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to acquire, store and synthesize environmental data. It serves as a platform to facilitate data management and analysis across divisions in DEQ, with an automated end-to-end workflow which enforces data standardization and increases data quality.

Laserfiche
The DEQ Laserfiche document and records management system provides secure document storage and easy retrieval, metadata-based organization and search, access control. Staff continue to update the database daily to transition DWR records from paper to digital format.
